Claygate Lodge October Meeting - What is Freemasonry?

Claygate Lodge held its October meeting in the warm and easy spirit that members have come to expect, with Worshipful Master Brian Corrigan once again guiding proceedings with his usual good humour. The evening had all the right ingredients of a well-run lodge night: friendly greetings, steady ritual, plenty of laughter in the right places, and a clear sense that everyone present was pleased to be back together. The lodge was especially delighted to welcome W.Bro Neil Tatham, whose lecture, entitled “What is Freemasonry?”, gave the evening a thoughtful and memorable focus. Rather than offering a simple definition, W.Bro Neil explored the subject through several lenses, touching on historical themes, esoteric ideas, Masonic symbols, and the long-standing fascination around Masonic secrets. His talk encouraged those present to think about Freemasonry not just as a set of meetings or ceremonies, but as a tradition shaped by fellowship, moral reflection, symbolism, and personal discovery.

After the meeting, the festive board carried on the same good-natured mood. Conversation flowed, visitors were made to feel at home, and the lecture provided a fine starting point for further discussion around the table. As usual, charity was not forgotten. The festive board raised a healthy sum for good causes, reflecting one of the most practical and appreciated parts of lodge life: the quiet, regular support members give to others while enjoying one another’s company.
